Complications That May Occur in Long-Term Acid Reflux

Though lifestyle habits and healthy eating habits may be capable to reduce the symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (or acid reflux disease), they are not able to cure the disease. Left unseen by a medical specialist and untreated for a longer period of time, acid reflux disease can seriously impact the body by irritating the lining of the esophagus, a cause for later, more serious complications.
What is gastroesophageal reflux disease?
Gastroesophageal reflux disease is a chronic condition in which mucosal damage is caused by the stomach acid coming up into the esophagus. Acid reflux is usually caused by the abnormal relaxation of the lower esophageal sphincter changes in the valve between the stomach and the esophagus.
What are the most severe long-term complications of acid reflux?
  • Barrett's Esophagus is a condition characterized by intestinal metaplasia, which usually precedes carcinoma. Because of the risk of chronic heartburn progressing to Barrett's, patients with acid reflux are recommended to undergo esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) at least every five years. It is observed that patients with Barrett's esophagus have significantly increased chances to develop esophageal cancer compared to acid reflux patients without Barrett's. Symptoms of the condition include: frequent and longstanding heartburn, difficulty swallowing, vomiting blood, chest pain and unintentional weight loss.
  • Esophageal Cancer is the cancer of the tissues of the esophagus. Despite all efforts of medical scientists, the actual cause of cancer remains unidentified, but a definite link can be made gastroesophageal reflux disease and esophageal cancer. Symptoms include difficult, painful, and husky cough, as a result of the tumor affecting the laryngeal nerve.
  • Laryngeal Cancer is the cancerous disease of the larynx and the condition is associated with preexisting acid reflux disease. Symptoms include hoarseness and other voice changes, lump in the neck, sore throat, persistent cough, bad breath, earache.
  • Erosive Esophagitis is the inflammation and swelling of the esophagus commonly caused by acid stomach that makes its way back up into the esophagus. Symptoms include pain in the chest or abdomen, nausea, etc.
  • Esophageal Stricture is a narrowing or tightening of the esophagus which can lead difficulties in swallowing food. Symptoms of esophageal strictures include heartburn, acid taste in the mouth, coughing, shortness of breath, and frequent burping or hiccups. Severe symptoms include pain or difficulty swallowing, throwing up blood and weight loss.
A simple glance at the list above is enough to point out the life-threatening aspect of a neglected acid reflux case. It is in consequence important to contact a medical specialist as soon as the first signs and symptoms of acid reflux disease are observed. Early diagnosis is one of the surest ways to keep the disease under control. Adopting healthy lifestyle habits can only help maintain good overall health.

Overview of Acid Reflux

Acid reflux can strike anyone at anytime. Acid reflux does not discriminate by age or whether you are a little overweight. Eating or drinking certain beverages can contribute or even bring on an attack. There is much that is still not known about why acid reflux occurs but it is believed that the varying pressures that build up in the stomach during the digesting period are the cause. Various food items will create different levels of pressure during this process that can push the stomach acid up and into the esophagus.
Acid reflux is a condition in which the stomach acid will travel backwards up the esophagus in to the base of the throat. This happens because the valve that separates the stomach and the esophagus is not operating properly. This sometimes troublesome valve in question is called the esophageal sphincter and it sits right at the point where the stomach and the esophagus join to keep the strong acids and gastric juices where they belong in the stomach to digest your food. The stomach linings are well equipped to handle these acids but unfortunately if the valve does not close properly the acid and gastric juices will back track into the esophagus where the lining is not strong enough to handle the acid. This is where you get the burning in the throat feeling which can be very painful.
It is important to remember that heart burn is normal and many people must cope with it. There is a fine line that can be crossed and severe acid reflux that occurs often will require a discussion with your doctor. Prolonged and untreated heart burn can lead to serious health problems that over time may require a surgical procedure to correct them.
Most people who suffer from acid reflux are very well aware of the trigger points that can lead to an attack. Dietary changes are the best prevention and can make all the difference when it comes to food. Foods high in fat or even spicy foods can bring on an attack. Avoid eating these foods if you can or if you must indulge try eating these meals late in the afternoon or early evening so they can digest well before bedtime. Other foods that trigger acid reflux are foods with high acid content like tomatoes, citrus, vinegar and items with garlic. Chocolate should be limited also because it produces serotonin and it is known now to cause the esophageal sphincter valve to relax and not function properly. Peppermint and spearmint even in gum also trigger the stomach to produce more acid than it needs. Coffee can really cause problems for some as it is a huge acid stimulant and caffeine is known now to open the esophageal sphincter and keep it from closing making it almost imposable to neutralize acid reflux for a long period of time.
Along with your dietary changes, exercise is quite affective in decreasing your symptoms. This can be accomplished even by simply walking after meals to burn calories to maintain or lose weight and aid in the digestive process. Your doctor can prescribe medicine or a pharmacist can give advice on the many over the counter remedies available in the pharmacy. Simple changes in your life style and eating habits will have a big impact on reducing your acid reflux symptoms.
I have suffered from acid reflux and have taken medication for years. It got to the point where I needed to do something so I committed to change my diet recently. Since changing my diet, I have not had to take any medication in over 4 months. Home remedies can also help alleviate some symptoms.

It is because of the prevalence of cholesterol-rich and processed food items. If you like eating lots of sweets and don't exercise, you are likely to get something like Type-2diabetes. According to the opinions of most health coaches, the main treatment for diabetes is not often done through pills or injections. It is a leading lifestyle change needs to be done. Here are five natural and proven methods for fighting diabetes.
Exercise Regularly
Regular exercise helps maintain a normal blood sugar level. When you exercise (at least for 30 minutes each day), the sugar and fats in the bloodstream are burned. It also improves blood circulation, reduces blood sugar levels, and wards of high blood pressure. You can exercise from the comforts of home or outdoors. By doing this every day, you help maintain a healthy body weight and decrease the chances of being diabetic.
Eat Fewer Sweets
Everyone loves eating chocolates and candies even if we know that eating too much of it can lead to diabetes. These staffs can increase blood sugar levels. If your blood sugar is high, you are likely a candidate for diabetes. It's vital that you prevent high blood sugar levels, so you can avoid having diabetes. In case you are a diabetic person, it's necessary to maintain a normal blood sugar level because maintaining the amount of sugar in the blood can prevent further complications, which is caused by diabetes. So, the next time you eat a chocolate, consider the amount of sugar that you're putting in your blood.
Eat More Fruits and Veggies
By eating a balanced meal, you get the right amount of vitamins, nutrients and minerals to the body. Fruits and veggies also help in expelling unwanted fats and cholesterol. Helcobacter Pylori: An Overview

Helicobacter pylori is an extremely common infection. It is estimated that up to 50% of population worldwide are infected by this organism. Fortunately, its overall infection rate has been in decline in recent years. Helicobacter pylori is thought to be transmitted by the fecal oral route. As a result, individuals from lesser developed countries with poor hygienic condition are more prone to contract this illness. Not surprisingly, Helicobacter pylori is more common in lesser developed countries.
H. pylori requires acid to survive and proliferate. Not surprisingly, it is found primarily in the human stomach. In fact, it is difficult to find this orgianism outside the human body. Once infected, the organism causes chronic and persistent inflammation in the stomach. Helicobacter pylori causes chronic gastritis, peptic ulcer, pre-malignant conditions of the stomach including intestinal metaplasia and dysplasia, as well as even stomach cancer. Studies have shown that there is up to 6 fold increase in the risk of developing stomach cancer in individuals infected with this organism. Fortunately, treatment of Helicobacter pylori appears to reduce this risk.
There are several methods of diagnosing H. pylori. They include serology, blood test that determines the presence of antibody against this particular organism. This test is, however, limited by the fact that the antibody may persist for years even after the organism is eradicated. Thus, blood test is not accurate in diagnosing an acute ongoing infection by Helicobacter pylori. Other tests for presence of this organism may include urea breath test and stool antigen test. We often recommend an upper endoscopy examination, carefully examining the entire lining of the stomach. At the same time, a small sampling or biopsy can be performed to test for Helicobacter pylori either under the microscope or with a special test called CLO test.
The treatment of H. pylori usually involves three medications called Triple Therapy. They include two antibiotics such as Amoxicillin and Clarithromycin, and a proton pump inhibitor such as omeprazole that suppresses the production of acid in the stomach. When the treatment is administered for a duration of 2 weeks, one can expect up to 80-90% cure rate from this infection.
H. pylori is an extremely common condition that can cause gastritis (inflammation of stomach), ulcer, and even stomach cancer. It is an infection that needs to be eradicated not only to treat gastritis or ulcer, but as a means to prevent the development of stomach cancer.

Particularities of Obesity Associated With Diabetes

It is good to understand that health is a valuable constituent of human life. However, good health is impossible without correct body care and proper nutrition. If the body is in a suitable shape and is ready to perform various kinds of activities, it instills the necessary self-confidence to the possessor of such a body. However, obese people may experience considerable psychological and physical difficulties because of their condition and health problems. Obesity is a serious disease. Moreover, obesity generates new diseases and therefore makes life of an obese individual painful and sad. Obesity also leads to emotional breakdowns, which are particularly sorrowful consequences of obesity.
Health threats in obesity
Thus, obesity is not only a cosmetic problem, but also a significant health threat. Extremely overweight individuals are at a constant risk to die earlier than persons who are in the normal weight range. The case is that obesity bears strong association with numerous serious illnesses such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and stroke.
Detection of overweight
Scientists have shown that the weight increase of several pounds may double the risk of diabetes development. On the contrary, individuals who are in normal weight range and do not gain weight remain on a safer side from this point of view. Studies carried out in various groups of populations have demonstrated that more than 80 % of people suffering from diabetes are obese or overweight. Thus, the close association between obesity and diabetes is clearly visible. Scientists often use special BMI calc for prompt determination of Body Mass Index and weight categories. At the same time, this useful tool helps detecting possible health risks including the risk of diabetes development.
Diabetes in obese patients
Nowadays, diabetes is considered among the most important diseases diagnosed in obese people. Diabetes significantly reduces the patient's ability to control and regulate the blood glucose. This inability to control blood glucose results in significant metabolic disorders. Diabetes becomes the main cause of heart disease, stroke, blindness, and early death among obese patients. The probability of diabetes development in obese people exceeds two times the likelihood of diabetes among people with normal weight. Type 2 diabetes is diagnosed particularly often in obese people. This type of diabetes develops as a result of insufficient insulin production by the body. Doctors also find body cell unresponsiveness to the insulin. Insulin, however, is required for glucose assimilation by the body. Glucose is a particularly important energy source for the living cells of the body. Insulin provides the glucose delivery into the cells from the blood.
How to overcome problems related to diabetes
The probability of diabetes development can be lowered by means of losing weight and exercising. In diabetes, the weight loss and increased physical activity help control the levels of glucose in blood. Increased physical activity may help reduce the intake of medications used for the treatment of diabetes. Moreover, weight loss can reduce the likelihood of heart disease and stroke. The health can be improved by losing from 10 to 20 pounds. Therefore, weight reduction can decrease the risks for developing of numerous dangerous conditions such as heart problems, increased blood pressure, and high blood cholesterol levels as well as increased triglyceride concentrations in blood. Consequently, it is good for diabetic patients to take steps towards weight reduction and improve their quality of life.
I can write articles related to many topics. My preferable subjects deal with physiology and medicine. I pay particular attention to the problems of overweight and underweight. I participate in a team activity for constructing special BMI tools such as BMI calc. These tools reveal the risks associated with obesity and anorexia.

The Best Acid Reflux Remedies for Well-Informed People

People who think all diseases and medical conditions are caused by bacteria and viruses need to think again. Some medical conditions are caused by factors which have nothing to do with pathogenic bacteria. One of these conditions is acid reflux disease which is also called heartburn.
Like most medical conditions, acid reflux disease can have a number of different causative factors. The main causes of heartburn are eating very large meals, lying down immediately after eating, snacking shortly before going to bed and smoking. Other possible causes of this condition are being overweight, being pregnant, eating spicy or fatty foods and taking certain medications.
It is very important to understand how the digestive system works because this will help patients get the right acid reflux remedies. When people eat, food passes from the esophagus into the stomach. There is a sort of valve at the entrance of the stomach and this valve is called the lower esophageal sphincter (LES). This valve is meant to close as soon as food passes through it. In cases where this valve does not close properly, acid produced by the stomach may move up into the esophagus. This acid causes the burning sensation somewhere in the chest and this is called heartburn. In cases where the lower esophageal sphincter opens too often, the acids from the stomach can also move up into the esophagus and this can cause the same burning or painful sensation described above.
Most normal people can experience heartburn once in a while but it is not supposed to happen very often. People who have heartburn more than twice a week are suffering from acid reflux disease. This condition is also known as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). It is not really a serious medical condition but it can be a very inconvenient affliction.
It is very important for people who have acid reflux symptoms to get trusted health information. This is because the wrong diagnosis can make matters very complicated. It is also vital to seek the right acid reflux remedies so that the problem can be solved effectively.
The best remedies for heartburn include changes in diet, changes in lifestyle and the use of the right medications. Patients who smoke should discontinue the habit, overweight patient will need to lose weight and people who eat very spicy foods will need to cut down on such foods. For medications, antacids are very effective. The best ones are the ones which contain both magnesium hydroxide and aluminum hydroxide.
People who are not keen on medications can try alternatives like baking soda, unprocessed Aloe Vera juice and apple cider vinegar. These are great alternatives and they are very safe too. As stated already, heartburn can be very inconvenient. The good news is that it can be treated with the right acid reflux remedies.

Two Inspiring Studies About Significance of Primary Care in Favorable Diabetes Outcomes

Significant Finding #1: "... improved control of glycaemia, lipids, and BP in patients with type 2 diabetes when compared with previous studies... "[Location: Catalonia, Spain; Setting: Primary Care] (Vinagre I, 2012)
Significant Finding #2: "... a primary care setting where regular monitoring of glycemic control is done, where patients concerns and fears about diabetes are addressed, where patients are educated about diabetes, diet and exercise and advised on compliance with medication leads to improved glycemic control... "... " [Location: Tobago and Trinidad, West Indies; Setting: Diabetes Primary Care Clinic] (Babwah T., 2011)
As diabetes cases surge globally, estimates point at a one in ten incidence rate of diabetic adults in North America alone (International Diabetes Federation). While diabetes is attributed to a number of causes including genetic and environmental risk factors, proper diabetes management seems to be influenced not just by medication, lifestyle and diet interventions but also the nature of relationship between patients and their physicians.
The PCP is the first contact point in the patient-physician relationship with respect to any medical condition, including diabetes. However, primary care physician shortage seems to create increasing pressure on the current physician pool. In conditions requiring detailed assessment of medical history and symptoms, this lack of attention and care at the primary level can spell the difference between success and failure in the realm of diabetes management.
Two recent inspiring cases have highlighted the role of the primary care setting in better diabetes management. The first one (Vinagre I, 2012) is a recent cross-sectional study that was carried out in Catalonia, Spain across primary health care centers. A huge population of 3,755,038 individuals between the ages 31 and 90 years was involved to identify 286,791 Type II diabetes patients. Diabetes management involved lifestyle changes, anti-diabetic drugs and insulin therapy. The study indicated encouraging results regarding improved glycemic control, and favorable results related to lipids and blood pressure in the study population. The role of early detection of the chronic condition, appropriate treatment by primary care professionals, and a "target-based management system" which was driven by financial incentives was highlighted by researchers.
The other study was about a three year long quality-improvement project at a Trinidad (West Indies) health center (Babwah T., 2011). The study included diabetic and diabetic hypertensive patients at a special diabetes clinic managed by a registered nurse and a PCP. Diabetics were not only monitored for their glycaemia, but also got a chance to discuss their concerns and fears regarding the complex disease accompanied by a number of co-morbidities. Education about disease manifestation, nutrition, exercise and physical activity and the importance of compliance to prescribed medication were essential objectives of the quality program. Unsurprisingly, superior glycemic control at the end of the three year period and the need for establishing such low-cost primary care clinics was identified.
In an era where more and more medical students choose to get into a specialized medical role, the significance of a primary care practitioner seems to have receded into the background. However, in order to achieve result oriented outcomes in chronic diabetes management, the human side of medicine, more so the primary care practitioner has a significant role to play in the long run.
